Focus on Value, Planning

Starting small

So, I’ve created a website (and a blog) about project management. I imagine it will be a cathartic experience, helping me work through my real-life experiences, thoughts, and observations as a project manager.

Where to start? I have decided to start with this one post, this one blog, and then I will write another. And another.

In preparation for writing a blog (in which I have no experience), I thought about a framework for what types of data my writing should contain to make them useful for me and others. So far, I have settled on:

  • my real-life experience
  • an online reference
  • a visual representation of the topic
  • a tool or technique

The checklist for each blog post helps me ensure consistency and completeness while allowing me to focus on one post at a time. In turn, I don’t feel so overwhelmed and can feel small successes that will keep me moving forward.

So, the simple ability to break larger tasks down into smaller ones—no matter what they are called—is so important to get the project going. It will build confidence in the team members and help strengthen the team.
